ATHLETICS | One of the premier invitational water polo tournaments is coming to LMU. That means 32 games over three days by 16 teams in two pools. The 2017 Mountain Pacific Invitational, co-hosted by LMU and USC, brings some of the country’s best water polo teams to Burns Aquatic Center over Sept. 22-24. The 17th-ranked Lions squad will be playing on campus for the first time this season. Tickets will be available on site for each of the three days.
But even before classes began, the Lions were competing; Lions victories include women’s volleyball sweep of Long Beach State in their recent home game, and at the year’s opening cross-country meet, the Mark Covert Classic at Cal State Fullerton, LMU’s women’s and men’s teams took second place, while All-American senior Danielle Shanahan was the women’s overall winner, running an impressive 17:56, nearly 15 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.
Men’s soccer is unbeaten in two Sullivan Field games this season, picking up a win and a tie. In the first weekend of September, women’s soccer went 2-0, including a win over No. 17-ranked Utah. Junior goalkeeper Charlee Pruitt did not allow a goal, earning National Player of the Week honors, and Head Coach Michelle Myers recorded her 50th career win.
