Jordan Peele Takes LMU Stage at Hollywood Masters

HM9TEASE 194x300 - Jordan Peele Takes LMU Stage at Hollywood Masters

ACADEMICS | Academy Award nominee Jordan Peele will be the first guest of the ninth season of the Hollywood Masters Series, the insiders’ look at filmmaking co-hosted by The Hollywood Reporter and LMU’s School of Film and Television. Peele, the writer and director of “Get Out,” one of the most-talked about films of 2017, will talk to host Stephen Galloway on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018 at 2 p.m. in the Mayer Theater.

Peele, 38, has been nominated for best director, best screenplay and his film is on the list for best picture. The horror-genre takeoff is a sly, trenchant look at race relations in America.

“We’ve seen an increase in racial tension and awareness related to statements by the U.S. president on immigration and the events at Charlottesville,” said Adilifu Nama, professor of African American studies. “So, issues concerning race and justice are increasingly vivid and dynamic today. In this context, Jordan Peele’s film has social, political, cultural and personal implications and relevance.”

The Los Angeles Times reported that Peele joins the annals of Oscars history with distinction: He is only the fifth black filmmaker in 90 years to be nominated for directing. And he’s the third first-time filmmaker to hit the nominations trifecta — picture, director and screenplay.

“The Hollywood Masters, our flagship program, gives our students an opportunity to learn directly from some of the most incredible talents in the industry,” said Stephen Ujlaki, dean of the School of Film and Television.

The Hollywood Masters tapings are open to the LMU community, with priority seating given to SFTV students and faculty in the 120-seat theater.
