Scavenger Hunt, Drill Highlight Quake Fest

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY | Being safe is no accident, the old saying goes.

In that spirit, Loyola Marymount University participates in the statewide Great Shakeout, holds an Emergency Preparedness Fair, and this year is sponsoring a weeklong virtual scavenger hunt with a prize for the winner.

On Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018, LMU will mark the USGS Great ShakeOut earthquake drill, along with 15 million people worldwide, on the 10th anniversary of the exercise. Both drills will be initiated by a public announcement at 10:18 a.m. and 6:15 p.m. Organizers and Public Safety officials ask that everyone on the LMU campus dedicate one minute to “drop, cover and hold” as if it were an actual earthquake. An LMU Earthquake Drill Guide will be available in every learning space.

Public Safety will host Quake Fest on the same day, Oct. 18. LMU’s seventh annual Emergency Preparedness Fair, from 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. in Lawton Plaza, will feature emergency management booth offering preparedness kits and advice. The first 150 visitors to the booth will receive a free earthquake bedside kit. Also, free tacos will be available to the first 150 attendees.

But there is a bit of fun to be had with all the preparing for disaster. During the week of Quake Fest, Oct. 15-19, Public Safety will hold a virtual scavenger hunt through the LiveSafe App. The app can be downloaded, and participants with the tip can type “scavenger hunt” for a chance to win an Amazon gift card.
