De Sena Named 2018 Counselor Educator of the Year

SCHOOL OF EDUCATION | Paul De Sena, professor of specialized programs in professional psychology in the School of Education at Loyola Marymount University, has been named Counselor Educator of the Year by the California Association of School Counselors.

De Sena, among LMU’s longest-serving teachers, was honored for his prominent record of excellent teaching, mentoring, scholarship, and service as professor and counselor educator, and for his extended commitment to advocating for school counselors at the local, state, regional, national, and international level.

“It is indeed an honor to have been recognized by this prestigious organization,” De Sena said. “I am most proud of the thousands of school counselors I have helped train and influenced over these many years.”

He is has taught at LMU for 52 years and was director of the Counselor Education Program for 37 years. De Sena has taught thousands of graduate students who have become committed school counselors influencing the lives of students at all school levels. He has served on many professional boards, and he is a consultant to several Los Angeles school districts. In 2013 De Sena was inducted into Stanford’s H.B. McDaniel Hall of Fame, which recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the counseling profession. He was awarded the 2014 Rains Award for Excellence in Service at LMU.

“Behind every great school is a caring counselor,” De Sena said. “Our youth need a caring, nurturing individual who can help them overcome current issues in their lives and help them mature into self-directing adults.”

De Sena was honored during a luncheon at the CSCA State Conference and Expo, Oct. 17-19, 2018, in Riverside.
