Dear LMU Community:
Last Friday the university failed to alert you about a potential threat in a prompt manner. I recognize and regret the anxiety and traumatic experiences caused by a reprehensible and potentially dangerous prank, which was compounded by our delayed communications. We are working swiftly to address our deficiencies with care and diligence to ensure that our emergency resources and protocols reflect our commitment to maintain the safety and security of our community.
The university’s performance last week was unacceptable. We are taking actions to address our mistakes:
- We have retained the law firm Musick Peeler & Garrett to oversee an investigation into what occurred and to recommend ways we can better communicate with you in an emergency.
- During the investigation, Assistant Chief Danny Martinez will lead Public Safety.
- We have established an Emergency Communications Action Plan Website to share progress, investigation findings and next steps.
- Student Affairs will continue providing care and support for students. The Employee Assistance Program is available for faculty and staff.
- I invite you to join me for a town hall meeting this Thursday, Nov. 15, from 10:15-11 a.m. in the Life Sciences Building Auditorium. Please submit your questions and concerns. I will begin by addressing questions we receive, followed by open-mic questions and comments.
- The university will conduct a test of the LMU Alert System on Friday, Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. Please take this opportunity to view or update your LMU Alert information so we may assure that you receive updates and instructions in an emergency.
I thank our student development professionals, resident advisors, campus ministers, and the faculty and staff for the strength and leadership they demonstrated during and after the events of Friday night.
