Lions Head to NCAA Volleyball Tournament

ATHLETICS | Following a sweep on Tuesday over the No.1 team in the nation, LMU women’s volleyball has been selected to participate in the 2018 Division I Championships. The Lions will play Duke on Friday night in Maples Pavilion on the Stanford University campus. The women’s volleyball program began the 2012, 2014, and 2015 NCAA tournaments in the Stanford Regional and defeated the No. 6 Cardinal in 2015 to win the region. The 2018 NCAA Tournament will be the 14th in program history, and first since the Sweet 16 run in 2015.

The record-breaking start continues for men’s basketball. The Lions opened the season with six-straight wins for the first time in program history after beating Central Connecticut State on Wednesday, then improved to 7-0 on the year with Saturday’s eight-point win over Florida A&M. The Lions have one more home game on Thursday before traveling to face UCLA in Westwood for a Pac-12 Network showdown on Sunday night at 7 p.m. Thursday’s game against Bethesda will be the annual SAAC Teddy Bear Toss where fans are encouraged to bring in a stuffed animal to throw on the court and donate to children in need.

The women’s basketball team is off to a 4-1 start this season after picking up wins at UCSB on Monday and in the final day of the 21st Annual Thanksgiving Classic over the Robert Morris Colonials on Saturday. Chelsey Gipson who posted career highs in points (21) and steals (5) in the victory earned recognition on the all-tournament team following Saturday’s games. The Lions will play their third annual Education Day game on Tuesday at noon where all fans, students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to spend their lunch breaks at the game against UC Davis.
