LMU Hosts Softball, Water Polo Tournaments

ATHLETICS | A busy stretch for spring sports teams continues this week, as LMU is set to host a pair of tournaments – one on the diamond, and one in the pool. LMU softball will host its second tournament in as many weeks, Thursday through Sunday, while women’s water polo will host a two-day invitational on Friday and Saturday to open the home portion of its schedule.

If you can’t wait until Thursday to get your fill of softball, the Lions will also welcome Ohio State on Tuesday for a pair of games starting at noon, and then return to Smith Field on Wednesday for games against Columbia and Monmouth.

Women’s water polo, fresh off handing San Diego State its first loss in Golden Coast Conference history, will welcome some of the top programs in the nation to Burns Aquatics Center beginning on Friday at 8 a.m. with a match against San Jose State. The Lions are set to play four matches over the course of the tournament, including a clash with Michigan on Saturday at 9:15 a.m.

LMU men’s tennis will also be back in action, welcoming Texas San Antonio to campus on Friday for a 9 a.m. match from the LMU Tennis Center. The Lions are 3-0 this year at home, and 8-2 overall, and enter the week ranked 36th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. LMU has won five straight matches, and individually, Nick Borchenko has won eight straight decisions.

LMU women’s tennis is also riding a lengthy win streak, having won its last seven matches. The Lions will travel to Arizona State this Saturday for an 11 a.m. match with the Sun Devils. LMU’s  Veronica Miroshnichenko is the 30th-ranked singles player according to the ITA in. The freshman is 16-4 overall this year, including going unbeaten at 9-0 in dual matches while playing at the No. 1 spot in LMU’s order. The Lions also boast a pair of ranked doubles teams, with Miroshnichenko and fellow freshman Eva Marie Voracek checking in at No. 33 overall. Anna Romeka and Siobhan Anderson are also ranked in doubles, carrying a No. 72 ranking according to the latest ITA poll. Miroshnichenko/Voracek are 15-4 overall, including 8-2 in dual matches, and have won seven straight decisions.
