LMU to Host 4th Annual California Teachers Summit

SCHOOL OF EDUCATION | Hundreds of educators will gather at Loyola Marymount University on Friday, July 27, for the fourth annual Better Together: California Teachers Summit – a free event that encourages teachers to explore different learning styles. This year’s theme is “It’s Personal: Meeting the Needs of Every Student.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Los Angeles teachers to our campus to join this growing network of dynamic educators,” said Mary McCullough, Ph.D., interim dean of LMU’s School of Education. “The LMU School of Education continues to serve as a statewide leader in this powerful day of learning for the fourth consecutive year, and we are excited to feature local teachers who will lead engaging EdTalk sessions.”

LMU is among 14 locations across the Los Angeles region and 31 sites in California that will participate in the summit. The university will livestream a keynote address by Sir Ken Robinson, a British author, speaker and international adviser on education in the arts, which will be seen at all host locations.

Attendees will participate in TED-style talks presented by local teachers, and join discussions about building student agency, personalizing learning with or without technology, and tailoring lessons in different subject areas, among others.

Kevin Melbourne, a teacher at Cowan Avenue Elementary School teacher, which is in the LMU Family of Schools, will serve as master of ceremonies, and EdTalk speakers will include: Bryan Sanders, M.A. ’99 education, Ed.D. ’19 candidate; and Culver City High School English teacher; and teacher Donia Horton of Playa Vista Elementary School, also in the LMU Family of Schools.

Throughout the day, 10,000 teachers from across California are expected to attend summit events at the various locations. The Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities, the California State University, and the New Teacher Center are hosting this year’s California Teachers Summit. LMU serves as the statewide fiduciary on behalf of the AICCU.  More information is available at www.cateacherssummit.com.
