LMU this Week

ATHLETICS | The men’s water polo team is set to make their season home debut on Saturday. It is the first conference game of the year and the perfect place for alums back on campus to root on the Lions. Everything will begin at noon as the Lions take on Air Force.

For the women’s volleyball team, the long wait was worth it. After opening the season with 10-straight games away from the bluff, LMU women’s volleyball returned to campus for a 3-1 win over Lamar in their home debuts. LMU’s 10-1 record to start the season is the best since beginning the 2014 campaign 12-0. LMU will return to the road next week, opening West Coast Conference at Gonzaga and Portland. The Lions will meet the Bulldogs on Thursday at 6 p.m. before taking on the Pilots at noon on Saturday.

Junior setter Tess Reid was named West Coast Conference Volleyball Player of the Week after guiding LMU to a 3-0 record and a tournament championship at the Kansas Invitational that included wins over Auburn, American and Kansas. Playing less than an hour from her hometown in Lenexa, Kansas, Reid finished the three matches having dished out 135 assists at a rate of 13.50 per set. She also added eight kills, four aces, 26 digs (2.60 per set) and one block assist.

Thanks to the 922 fans who packed the Sullivan Field bleachers on Thursday night to create an amazing atmosphere as LMU women’s soccer took on #8 UCLA. The crowd size was the third-largest in program history for a women’s soccer match at Sullivan.

The golf season is underway. Men’s golf is currently in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, representing the WCC in the Golfweek Conference Challenge, a tournament that features one school from each of the top-16 golf conferences in the NCAA. Loyola Marymount is led by senior Riley Elmes, who has been named to the 2018-19 West Coast Conference Preseason All-WCC Team, after leading the Lions as a junior and landing a spot in the NCAA regionals last season.

It’s time to claim tickets to three of the top games on the men’s basketball conference schedule. The Gonzaga/Saint Mary’s/BYU mini plan is now available and starts at just $29. The West Coast Conference announced that the Gonzaga game at Gersten Pavilion will be televised nationally on either ESPN2 or ESPNU on the evening of Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14.

The full women’s basketball schedule has been revealed. The Lions have a strong schedule including opening night at home hosting against UCLA, the return of the annual LMU Thanksgiving Classic, and a trip to Puerto Rico.

LMU women’s swim team hosted a special signing day event last week. Thanks to a partnership with Team IMPACT, LMU swimming added a new member to the squad on Friday, as 15-year-old Grace Camargos-Orr was drafted as part of a press conference held at LMU’s Burns Aquatics Center. As a team member, Grace will attend Lions practices, games, team dinners, events, and more.

Following stellar freshmen tennis campaigns in 2018, LMU sophomores Veronica Miroshnichenko and Eva Marie Voracek are preparing to play in top-level fall tournaments in the next month. Miroshnichenko has been selected to play singles at both the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships and the Oracle ITA Masters, while the pair will compete in doubles at the All-American Championships. Voracek has also been named to the prequalifying singles alternate list at that same tournament.

Women’s tennis also made campus news with former player Elisaveta Pironkova Petrov ’12 created the winning design selected to be the mural outside the elevator at the new LMU Playa Vista Campus.
