LMU Swimmers Capture Lions Cup

ATHLETICS | Following two days and three sessions of competition, the Loyola Marymount swim team has won the Third Annual Lions Cup this past weekend. LMU scored 320 points through 19 events to top Pepperdine’s 299 and Alaska Fairbanks’ 229 on Friday and Saturday. The Lions will get another look at the Nanooks when LMU travels to Alaska Fairbanks on Jan. 25-26.

The men’s basketball team continues conference play this weekend with a trip north to face Gonzaga on Thursday night. Following the date with the nation’s fifth-ranked team, LMU will be back at Gersten Pavilion for a rematch with Pepperdine in the home leg of the PCH Cup.

With his strong play throughout the first stretch of the season, senior James Batemon has been named to the Lou Henson Award Watch List. The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the nation’s top mid-major player in Division I College Basketball. The 2019 Lou Henson Award will be presented at the College Insider awards event in April at the site of the men’s division I national championship in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Following their triple overtime thriller, the Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team has just one focus this week: Beat Pepperdine. The Lions travel to Malibu for the road end of the PCH Cup on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams open their spring seasons this week. The women’s team competes Friday at 5 p.m. at University of Oregon, while the men open at home Sunday at noon against Fresno State.

The LMU Spirit Squad will host a pre-game Spirit Day clinic prior to the LMU men’s basketball team’s game against Santa Clara as part of Senior Day on Thursday, Feb. 28 at Gersten Pavilion. This is for all ages and skill levels. Pricing and registration includes a two hour clinic, T-shirt, a ticket to the basketball game, lunch during the clinic and joining the LMU cheerleaders and dancers on the court for a halftime performance. LMU’s baseball team announces the full schedule of events for Jan. 26, as the Lions will host the annual Alumni Game and Casino Night. The events begin at 10:30 a.m. from Page Stadium with batting practice for the Alumni Game prior to a noon first pitch. Former players, parents and fans are all invited to attend the Alumni Game followed by the seventh annual LMU Baseball Casino Night at the Westin Los Angeles Airport.

LMU continues the celebration of its incredible athletics legacy by introducing our Athletics Hall of Fame Class for 2019. The LMU Athletics Hall of Fame class will be inducted on Saturday, Feb. 16 at Roski Dining Room at 6:30 p.m., following the men’s basketball game against BYU. Tickets for the banquet and game are still available.
