ACADEMIC AFFAIRS | Loyola Marymount University this month welcomes two administrators who will lead key areas for students and faculty. Lisa Loberg, Ed.D., is LMU’s incoming director of study abroad, and Rebecca Hong, Ed.D., joins LMU as senior director of educational effectiveness and assessment, serving as the university’s accreditation officer for the WASC Senior College and University Commission – WSCUC – the higher education accreditation body.
Loberg joins LMU from California Lutheran University, where she was a senior lecturer in the Department of Languages and Cultures and senior director of global engagement for study abroad. In addition to teaching, she created the university’s study abroad center, expanded international programs and partnerships, and worked on initiatives to promote Cal Lutheran’s internationalization.
Active in the field of International Education for more that 13 years, Loberg is the private university representative for CalAbroad, a regional organization for study abroad professionals. She also serves on the advisory boards for IAU College in Aix-en-Provence, France, and the American Institute for Foreign Study. She was a co-founder of the nonprofit organization, Lessons From Abroad, which provides resources, programming, and regional conferences to study abroad returnees throughout the United States. Loberg previously worked for the American University of Paris and Boston College.
Loberg earned her Ed.D. in educational leadership from UCLA and her M.A. in French from Boston College. Her research examines student participation in study abroad, as well as outcomes of a study abroad experience.
Hong joins LMU from Biola University in La Mirada, where she served most recently as dean of curriculum and assessment and assistant provost for educational effectiveness. As the institution’s chief accreditation officer, she worked with faculty and deans to oversee the assessment of 150 bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and doctoral programs across seven colleges and schools. During her time there, Hong initiated innovative assessment projects, such as the “Faculty Assessment Fellows” and “Student Assessment Scholars” programs.
Teaching courses such as “Sociology of Education” and “Research in Diversity and Intercultural Instruction,” at her previous institution, Hong held the rank of associate professor and published articles and book chapters on topics related to assessment. At LMU, Hong will provide workshops, training, and consulting support to academic departments and programs in their assessment, program evaluation, and accreditation efforts. Hong will also serve as a member of the provost’s leadership team.
Hong earned her Ed.D. in educational leadership for higher education administration from USC, her M.A. in education and instruction from Biola, and her B.A. in economics with a minor in teacher education from UC San Diego. She is also a graduate of the WSCUC Assessment Leadership Academy.
