“Love of God, Love of Justice: The Cases of Dorothy Day and Simone Weil”

BCLA | What is Latin American liberation theology? How do Dorothy Day and Simone Weil continue to inspire this movement? Maria Clara Bingemer, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, will explore these questions and more during this year’s Mary Milligan, R.S.H.M. Lecture in Spirituality. Bingemer’s lecture also coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Conference of Medellin and will highlight Dorothy Day and Simone Weil’s deep commitment to the poor and connection to God, as well as how their lives continue to motivate various intersections of faith, justice, and politics.

The 2019 Mary Milligan lecture will take place on March 5 at 7 p.m. in Roski Dining Room. A reception will follow in the Marymount Institute on the third floor of University Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public, but RSVP is required. Register, or stream online at: bellarmine.lmu.edu/milligan.

Bingemer is a Brazilian theologian who is widely published in many languages. She serves on the editorial boards of many theological journals, including Concilium. She focuses her research on systematic theology and contemporary mysticism, as well as Latin American and liberation theology. Bingemer was previously the former dean of the Center of Theology and Human Sciences at PUC-Rio and held the first Duffy Lectures Chair at Boston College in spring 2015.

Named in honor of Mary Milligan, R.S.H.M., the Mary Milligan lecture series began in 2013. The lecture was established to create a forum for critical reflection on spirituality in service to the Church, the academy and the world and in keeping with the charism of the R.S.H.M. community – “that all may have life and have it to the full.”

The 2019 Mary Milligan, R.S.H.M. Lecture in Spirituality is hosted in partnership with the 2018-19 Bellarmine Forum, themed “Collaboration and Creativity, Faith, Culture, and the Arts.”
