MISSION AND MINISTRY | Ash Wednesday, March 6, 2019, the beginning of Lent, is the season for reflection, prayer and fasting in preparation for Easter.
On Ash Wednesday, Christians receive ashes on their foreheads – a reminder that life is short, and that the time to put our lives in order is now. The word “Lent” comes from the Old English for “springtime” when days “lengthen.”
The three basic practices of Lent are: (1) Fasting – from excessive food, from meat (especially on Fridays), and from all of the situations and habits which oppress us and keep us from living fully; (2) Prayer – spending time with God, and attending to our spiritual lives; and (3) Almsgiving – giving to the poor our time, our money, our efforts and our care, and focusing on changing unjust situations.
Ash Wednesday Masses will take place Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at the following locations:
- Leavey Chapel – 7:30 a.m.
- Sacred Heart Chapel – noon
- Ahmanson 1000 – 4 p.m.
