The Loyola Marymount softball team shut out the University of San Diego in both of its games on Saturday, as the Lions beat the Toreros 2-0 in their first game and 8-0 in the second. The sweep was completed on Sunday with a 4-3 come-from-behind win over USD with all four LMU runs coming in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Lions host New Mexico State on Monday in their final nonconference game of the season, before resuming West Coast Conference action over the weekend at Santa Clara.
The LMU baseball team stays atop the conference standings after winning another home series over the weekend. The bats were alive against San Diego on Friday to the tune of 10 runs, then it was a comeback one-run win on Saturday that clinched the series, before the Toreros got one back on Sunday. A midweek game against UC Riverside will be played at Page Stadium before the Lions travel to St. Mary’s for a Thursday-through-Sunday series heading into Easter.
From the Hawaiian Islands to the Santa Monica sands, LMU’s beach volleyball team is playing their biggest week of the season to date. The Lions competed in the First Foundation Queen’s Cup Saturday at Queen’s Beach and advanced to the championships before falling to the hosts and sixth-ranked Hawaii Sandbows. Returning to California, the Lions will shift focus to this weekend’s WCC Championships. As the host institution, LMU welcomes conference foes to the Ocean Park Courts in Santa Monica for Friday and Saturday competition to determine a WCC Champion.
In their final home week of the season, LMU men’s tennis upset No. 38 BYU on Friday afternoon, as the Lions won 4-2, and then recognized two seniors in their final home match of the season before dropping a 4-1 match to San Diego. The team closes out the regular season on Friday at Santa Clara and Saturday at San Francisco, before heading to the WCC Championships at the end of the month.
LMU women’s tennis team opened their weeklong road trip with a nonconference matchup at No. 46 Utah, battling to the end in a 4-3 loss. The Lions recovered with a 4-1 WCC win over BYU before closing out the weekend with a 4-2 setback at San Diego. Three final opportunities to see the Lions at home this season begin with a nonconference game against Long Beach State on Wednesday. The WCC regular season concludes against Santa Clara on Thursday and San Francisco on Saturday.
Competing at the 46th annual San Diego Crew Classic over the weekend, Loyola Marymount rowing placed boats in three finals. The women’s varsity 8 competed in the Grand Final on Sunday for the UC San Diego Health Cup by posting a top-three time of 6:41.593 in Saturday’s second heat. The Lions were narrowly bested by the University of San Diego’s time of 6:39.599 in the heat. In the women’s V8 Grand Final the Lions placed second with a time of 6:52.525 just behind Drexel University’s time of 6:48.587 and ahead of University of San Diego’s time of 6:55.861. On the men’s side, LMU took fifth in Varsity 8 at San Diego Crew Classic.
The regular season has come to a close as LMU men’s golf concluded their final tournament of the year before WCC Championships start in two weeks. The Lions jumped Pacific on the final day of the El Macero Classic to place 11th in the field of 15 with a 309-295-296—900. Finishing in the top 20 for his seventh consecutive tournament, senior Riley Elmes led the way for the Lions with his 70-76-75—220. The WCC Championships will be held at the Reserve at Spanos Park from April 25-27.
