Reid, Esquerra Named Athletes of the Year

ATHLETICS | The 14th annual Iggy Awards celebrated LMU’s best and brightest student-athletes for their accomplishments in competition and in the classroom. Baseball player Trevin Esquerra and volleyball player Tess Reid highlighted the 2019 Lions Athletic Fund Iggy Awards by taking home Male Athlete of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year, on Monday, April 29, 2019. at the Westin Los Angeles Airport. The Athlete of the Year honors were among the many Iggy Awards handed out on Monday.

LMU’s softball team closed out their regular season with another series win. The Lions split on Saturday, only to take the rubber match 10-2 in the final game of the regular season. At 11-4 in WCC play, there will be plenty of scoreboard watching this upcoming weekend as 10-2 BYU plays their final three games at Santa Clara with conference championship implications on the line.

The baseball team opened their week with a two-run ninth inning to take a back-and-forth Tuesday game over Long Beach State, 6-5, on the road. BYU then came to Page Stadium for three, beginning with a Thursday series-opening 5-1 win. The Cougars took the next two, with an 8-5 win on Friday night and a 10-3 game to claim the series. BYU’s wins propelled them to first in the WCC baseball standings, with LMU tied for third with one conference series remaining. The regular season will wind down with five games that final week, including a home game against USC on May 14 and the series against Gonzaga over the weekend to determine which top four teams that will advance to Banner Island for the WCC Championships.

Senior golfer Riley Elmes will play on for the second straight year. LMU’s First Team All-Conference performer has been selected as an individual competitor for the 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships. Elmes will represent the Lions at the Stanford Regional on May 13-15. Additionally, sophomore teammates Samuel Su and Cameron Meeks were named to the WCC all-academic honorable mention team for the first time in their careers.

More accomplishments were announced on the sand. Loyola Marymount beach volleyball head coach John Mayer was named the West Coast Conference Coach of the Year, while Reka Orsi Toth was named WCC Freshman of the Year. Eight other Lions were named to 2019 all-WCC beach volleyball first team, second team and freshman team, announced by the conference on Tuesday.

Men’s and women’s tennis each saw players named to the conference’s all-academic teams. On the men’s side, Ethan Prost was named to the 2019 West Coast Conference Men’s Tennis All-Academic Team, while Max Kaiser was named honorable mention. For the women, Siohban Anderson was named to the 2019 West Coast Conference Women’s Tennis All-Academic Team, while Yesica De Lucas and Camila Tumosa were named honorable mention.

The Loyola Marymount women’s rowing team showed well at the 2019 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships over the weekend from Lake Natoma reaching five grand finals and finishing first in the women’s Novice 4. The LMU women will now prepare for the WCC Rowing Championships from Lake Natoma on May 18.

This weekend, 81 student-athletes across all sports will earn their undergraduate or graduate degrees at the #LMU19 commencement ceremonies. LMU Athletics will be well represented throughout the weekend by the accomplished senior class.
