LMU Hosts Top-Flight English Soccer Team

ATHLETICS | For the second straight year, a major world soccer club has trained at LMU’s Sullivan Field over the summer. Following Tottenham’s footsteps from a year ago, Arsenal F.C. has been practicing on the bluff during their time in the International Champions Cup. The club arrived to LMU men’s and women’s soccer facility for training July 12, 2019, to prepare for a thrilling match and late win over FC Bayern on July 17 at Dignity Health Park in Carson, California.

Loyola Marymount has been ranked number No. 14 for its Division I Women’s soccer program in the latest NCAA student-athlete rankings, putting LMU in the top 5 percent of schools in the nation for the sport. The Lions have improved their ranking position one slot over the previous year. This ranking of best schools for student-athletes takes into account the athletic competitiveness of the specific team and the academic progress of the student-athletes on the team.

The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) today announced the 2018-19 NABC Honors Court, recognizing those men’s collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics during the past season. Rising senior Erik Johansson was lauded by the organization for his academics during the 2018-19 season. Johansson posted a 3.50 GPA in the spring and carries a 3.49 overall GPA following his three seasons as a Lion. On the court, the Swede competed in 30 games for the second consecutive season and scored a season-high nine points on three separate occasions, including in the CBI Semifinals at South Florida.

Three Loyola Marymount tennis players were named 2019 ITA Scholar Athletes, announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Thursday. Juniors Cartier Juan, Max Kaiser and sophomore Ethan Prost received the honors, as all three athletes had above a 3.50 GPA. In addition, the men’s tennis team will add blue chip recruit Alex Rushin to the roster in the fall, announced by Coach Tom Lloyd. Rushin, a transfer from Auburn, went 7-4 overall in singles play and had an undefeated 4-0 record in nonconference play his sophomore season, while going 6-4 in doubles play.
