Key Obama Administration Official Speaks at LMU

LMU BELLARMINE COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS | Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser to former President Barack Obama, is coming to Loyola Marymount University to talk about his time in government service and have a student-moderated discussion. Rhodes’ talk, hosted by the Global Policy Institute in conjunction with the International Relations program, Political Science Department, Sociology Department, Asian and Asian American Studies Department, and History Department, will be Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019, at 5 p.m. in Ahmanson Auditorium.

Rhodes participated in nearly all of President Obama’s key decisions and played a key role in negotiations mediated by the Vatican to help reestablish diplomatic relations with Cuba. He also oversaw the president’s national security communications, speechwriting, public diplomacy and global engagement programming and served as an adviser to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran, and wrote Obama’s Cairo speech in 2009, “A New Beginning.”

He will share anecdotes and a behind-the-scenes look at his time in the Obama administration as chronicled in his New York Times bestseller “The World as It Is,” as part of the Global Policy Institute’s program to engage policy leaders, opinion makers, and researchers on emerging issues in global affairs.

The discussion will be moderated by Tia Carr and Yolanda Nosakhare, two students from LMU Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts. After the discussion books will available for purchase and signed by the author.

This event is free and open to all LMU students, faculty, staff and the public. Registration is requested, but does not guarantee a seat. Please register here. For further information, visit bellarmine.lmu.edu/Rhodes, or contact gpi@lmu.edu.
