LMU Cross Country to Host WCC Championship

ATHLETICS | The Loyola Marymount men’s and women’s cross country program will host the West Coast Conference Championships, for the first time under head coach Scott Guerrero, on Nov. 1, 2019, at Woodley Lakes Golf Course in Van Nuys, California. The team also released their schedule this week, and will compete in seven meets prior to hosting the WCC championship. The season begins Saturday at the Mark Covert Classic.

The women’s soccer team kicked off the 2019-20 school year with a pair of games in the Steel City. On opening day, the Lions fought in a back-and-forth battle at Pitt before falling 5-4 in a nine-goal thriller. LMU then responded Sunday with a 90th minute penalty kick goal at Duquesne to earn a 1-1 double-overtime draw. Sullivan Field will be busy this week as the women’s team plays at home Thursday at 7 p.m. against San Jose State and again on Sunday at 1 p.m. versus Penn State for the first game in the WCC/Big 10 Challenge that day.

The men’s soccer team will open their regular season at home this week as well, after hosting UCSB in an exhibition match on Saturday. The Lions will cap off the first week of classes with a home game Friday, Aug. 30, 2019, against the Virginia Tech Hokies at Sullivan Field.

LMU will start the season ranked 14th in the CWPA Men’s Water Polo poll. The Lions finished the 2018 season with a win in the third-place game of the Western Water Polo Association Tournament and a No. 12 national ranking in the final CWPA poll. The season begins at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Sept. 7-8, 2019.

Several former Lions were back on campus over the weekend as the women’s water program welcomed back their alums in the annual Alumni Match. The regular season begins this upcoming weekend with three road games at the University of Arizona Tournament in Tucson. LMU will play Samford and Arizona on Friday, then Appalachian State to close out the tournament on Saturday.
