Safety Reminders for Cart Drivers

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY | The office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) kindly reminds all registered cart drivers of the LMU rules surrounding cart operation on campus.

“It’s easy to get complacent when campus is quiet in the summer,” said Roel Enriquez, Interim Director for EHS. “But the start of classes means increased activity, and thus more obstacles and pedestrians that drivers need to be aware of. So it’s a good time to remind ourselves of the rules of the road.”

EHS put together the following refresher of key cart safety rules, as a courtesy to drivers.

  • Only drive carts if authorized and trained by EHS.
  • Do not drive in pedestrian walkways! (i.e., Dismount Zone/palm walk, alumni mall, etc.) except during emergencies or if the cart is specifically required to conduct work in a particular area (in which case, a slow speed shall be maintained). This rule is applicable throughout the year, including the summer and holiday break periods.
  • Keep a safe distance from pedestrians and other vehicles.
  • Keep hands free (no eating/drinking/phone use). Use hand signals for turns and stops.

To register for cart safety training (which is done by supervisors/managers), and for questions surrounding cart safety, contact the office of Environmental Health and Safety at 310.338.7861 or email antonio.chavez@lmu.edu .
