Hats for Hope: Knitting as a Tool for Social Justice

Hats for Hope: Knitting as a Tool for Social Justice is an LMU cross-campus and local community collaboration recognizing National LGBT History Month and National Bullying Prevention Month in October. Hats for Hope will create opportunities for the LMU community to learn how to knit hats in support of the LGBTQ community and Anti-Bullying.

Hats for Hope is a series of events beginning with a free “Learn and Lunch” on October 16 highlighting how knitting has a deep connection to social justice activities.  Two knitting workshops will follow on October 17 and October 23 for the beginning knitter. Hats for Hope is an opportunity to knit (or crochet) a head covering to support the LGBTQ community and take a stand against all types of bullying.

In tandem with Hats for Hope, renowned collective Yarn Bombing Los Angeles will create an eclectic purple-and-blue-themed, yarn-based intervention installation at LMU also inspired by anti-bullying and LGBTQ social justice themes. This project will debut on Palm Walk at Lawton Plaza on October 14.

This display will serve as the backdrop for LGBTSS Spirit Day Anti Bullying Pledge Drive on October 17 in which the campus community can receive resources and pledge materials to be upstanders against bullying.

Hats for Hope: Knitting as a Tool for Social Justice is sponsored by the College of Communication and Fine Arts, LMU Staff Senate, LGBTQ Student Services, Jewish Student Life, Laband Art Gallery, Hannon Library’s Iggy’s Yarnsters, in collaboration with

Yarn Bombing Los Angeles, and The Knitting Tree L.A.
