Lion Men Gain Momentum

ATHLETICS| LMU men’s basketball evened their record on Friday night with a 79-76 win over Prairie View A&M. Four Lions scored in double digits as LMU never trailed leading to the team’s second consecutive home win. The Lions travel to UC Davis next for a Monday night game against the Aggies, who will be coming off a close loss to San Diego on Saturday.

Former Loyola Marymount University right-handed pitcher Trevor Megill was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday morning. The 6-foot-8 Megill posted a 3.86 ERA and 1.40 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) in 39 relief appearances across three minor league levels in 2019. He finished the season at Triple-A, where he had a 4.47 ERA in 32 relief appearances. Megill graduated in 2015 and was selected by the San Diego Padres in the seventh round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He had been drafted in the third round of the 2014 MLB draft by the St. Louis Cardinals despite not appearing in a game for the Lions that year. He graduated a semester early out of high school to attend LMU for the 2012 baseball season and garnered Honorable Mention All-WCC and All-Freshman Team recognition.

Three LMU men’s soccer players have earned 2019 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men’s All-West Region Team recognition. Junior defender Gerardo Lopez was named to the First Team, junior midfielder Bastien Oberli was selected to the Second Team and first-year student Noel Caliskan was tabbed as a member of the Third Team. All three players were key to the Lions returning to the NCAA tournament for the first time since the 2013 season. Head Coach Paul Krumpe and his Lions look to make back-to-back appearances in the postseason for the first time since putting together a string of four-straight that ran from 2001-04.

Three LMU volleyball players earned 2019 West Coast Conference All-Academic recognition, announced Wednesday by the conference: graduating seniors Savannah Slattery and Tess Reid, and Megan Rice will return to LMU next season to compete as a senior. To be considered, athletes were required to have at least a 3.20 GPA, while being a significant contributor to the team and having at least a sophomore standing.
