Baseball Season Opens Against Washington

ATHLETICS | Loyola Marymount University Athletics has announced single game tickets for the 2020 baseball season are now on sale. Single game tickets can be purchased for as low as $9 in the general admission section and $19 in the reserved seating section. On the field, infielder Trevin Esquerra and right-handed pitcher Nick Frasso earned spots on this season’s 2020 All-WCC Preseason Baseball Team. The 2020 season begins with the Lions hosting Washington for a weekend series that includes opening day on Friday, Feb. 14, at Page Stadium with first pitch slated for 6 p.m.

The LMU softball team won its first game of the season on Friday, as the team made a seventh-inning comeback to beat San Jose State at the Cal State Fullerton Titan Classic. The Lions then split on the second day, as the team beat Middle Tennessee,  5-4, and lost to Utah State, 7-4. Despite battling it out against UC Riverside, the team fell against the Highlanders, then lost its second game against Cal State Fullerton at the Titan Classic. On Monday, Molly Grumbo earned the first WCC Player of the Week Honors of the 2020 season after she hit .529 with two home runs, five RBI, and nine hits in the five weekend games. The Lions will head next week to Lake Elsinore, California, for the Golden State Plus 27 tournament.

The LMU men’s basketball team was four seconds away from heading into halftime down just five points to No. 2 Gonzaga. The Bulldogs shot 60 percent in the game to beat the Lions, 85-67. The Lions will return to the court for Thursday’s home game against BYU. The game will tip at 8 p.m. and will air on ESPNU. On Saturday, LMU has an afternoon game at Santa Clara.

The Loyola Marymount University women’s basketball team had an intense first quarter against the Santa Clara Broncos, but it wasn’t enough as the Lions fell, 76-70, on Thursday. The Lions nearly pulled off the upset on Saturday following a dominate fourth quarter against the University of San Francisco. LMU pushed the Dons to the end but couldn’t come up with the win. The Lions were led by Jasmine Jones, who picked up her seventh double-double of the season. The Lions will be back home on Saturday in Gersten Pavilion to host Pepperdine.

LMU women’s water polo team opened the 2020 UCSD Triton Invitational with a rematch against No. 12 Long Beach State. The No. 16 Lions held tight with The Beach, before ultimately dropping the opening game of the tournament by a goal, 8-7. LMU responded in the second game of the day, beating Villanova, 19-5. The Lions came out sharp on Sunday against No. 21 San Diego State, topping the Aztecs, 12-8. This set the Lions into the 9th-Place game against No. 9-T UC Davis. LMU upset the Aggies with a fourth quarter comeback, 8-7. The Lions will take a week off of competition before heading to Irvine for the UC Irvine Invitational on Feb. 21-23.

The doubles tandem of Eva Marie Voracek and Yesica de Lucas were named to the first West Coast Conference Double Players of the Week honors. The tandem clinched the doubles point for the Lions, after beating Oregon on Court Two, 7-5. The doubles point led the Lions to their 6-1 win over the Ducks. The pair is 1-1 on the season. The Lions are 2-1 on the season and will take on University of Utah at home on Sunday, Feb. 16.

The LMU men’s tennis team picked up an impressive 6-1 win over San Diego State University on Saturday afternoon at LMU Tennis Center. The Lions will take their first road trip of the season next week, as the team will head up to San Luis Obispo to take on Cal Poly.

The 2020 spring tournament schedule is underway as LMU men’s golf is set to compete in the Orange County Collegiate Classic. The two-day tournament will open with 36 holes on Monday, Feb. 10, and conclude with the final 18 holes played on Tuesday.

The Lions women’s rowing team debuted their 2020 season Saturday morning, Feb. 8th, against the nationally ranked USC in San Pedro. Following this competition, women’s rowing will be taking a week away from competition to gear up for scrimmages in Marina del Rey against UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 22 and UCLA on March 14.

Former LMU teammates Grace Graham-Zamudio ’15 and Danielle Shanahan ’18 placed fifth and sixth, respectively, at the USA Track and Field Cross Country Championships on Jan 18. Both Lions will represent Team USA at the Pan American Cross Country Championships in Victoria, B.C., on Feb. 29, 2020.
