CSJ Center Honors LMU’s Hidden Heroes

MISSION AND MINISTRY | Amid the drumbeat of difficult and distressing news, the CSJ Center for Reconciliation and Justice and the Hidden Heroes Advisory Committee offer five rays of hope and goodwill.

The ninth annual Hidden Heroes Awards will be presented on Oct. 25, 2020, in a virtual setting. The awards recognize LMU faculty, staff, students, alumni and community partners whose work and lives unassumingly exemplify justice and reconciliation. Each awardee will be honored through the telling of their story in a dramatic narrative.

“Each year I eagerly anticipate our Hidden Heroes celebration,” said MaryAnne Huepper, C.S.J., associate director of the Center for Reconciliation and Justice. “Why? Because it reminds me that women and men of courage, creativity, and generosity – hidden in our midst – are making a difference every day.  This is a great reason to celebrate!”

The five Hidden Heroes for 2020 to be honored are:

  • Efren Chavez, LMU recycling team member;
  • Darin Earley, director of the LMU Family of Schools in the LMU School of Education;
  • John Flaherty, associate director of Campus Ministry and director of liturgy and music;
  • Christine Mary Nangle-Koehl, associate director of Campus Ministry; and
  • Judy Vaughan, C.S.J., founding director of Alexandria House.

The awards performances can be viewed on Zoom or on Facebook Live at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25. The heroes’ lives will be presented by: Dean Bryant Keith Alexander, Doris Baizley, Bonnie Banfield, Gabriel Gonzalez, Julianne Homokay, Leon Martell, Lily Rains, Elizabeth Ruscio, and Luis Seigas. The script was edited by Baizley and the production was directed by Judith Royer, C.S.J.
