Men’s Soccer Team Wins Two More Shutouts

LMU men’s soccer closed out the homestand with two more shutout wins this week. The Lions went on a scoring barrage and netted a season-high three goals en route to their 3-0 victory over Sacramento State on Friday night at Sullivan Field. LMU closed out their five-game home stand as they beat UC Davis 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The win, LMU’s fourth straight, is the longest win streak since the 2015 season when the Lions rolled off five straight to open the campaign. The team hits the road for the first time this season with a Thursday game at UC Riverside then a Sunday evening game at Cal State Northridge.

The WWPA/GCC Conference Challenge Cup featured four men’s water polo games on Saturday. Blazo Mitrovic scored six goals in a game for the fifth time in his career, to open the day, and added two more in the afternoon contest, but LMU lost the pair of games in Saturday’s home debut. The higher-ranked team won all four games in the WWPA/GCC Conference Challenge Cup, with Pepperdine and UC Irvine winning each of their two games. Conference play begins as LMU against Fresno Pacific on Sept. 21 at noon in Fresno, California. The game is scheduled to be played at Sunnyside Aquatics Center.

The Lions men’s and women’s cross country teams got their first look at the NCAA West Regional site when they competed in the Cougar Classic at Colfax Golf Club in Colfax, Washington, on Friday night. The Lions six runners for the women’s team and 10 on the men’s side to compete against runners from all over the West region. LMU will take a week away from the course before they head back into competition with the Capital Cross Challenge at Arcade Creek Golf Course in Sacramento on Sept. 28.

The LMU volleyball team split on its first day at the Nebraska Tournament in Lincoln, Nebraska, as the team fell to University of Denver, 3-2, and then swept High Point University, 3-0. On Saturday, the Lions put up a fight against No. 2 Nebraska on the last day of the Nebraska Tournament on Saturday afternoon, but fell to the Cornhuskers, 3-1. The Lions have one more road tournament this season before the start of WCC play. LMU will compete at the Butler Tournament to face Belmont, Illinois, and the Bulldogs this upcoming weekend.

The women’s soccer team competed in the Cougar Cup Pullman, Washington, over the weekend. On Friday, LMU scored in the 69th minute to cut their deficit in half, but Texas Tech proved to be too much throughout and took the game, 3-1, to open the tournament. On Sunday, the 13th-ranked Cougars scored in the game’s opening minutes, but LMU provided a quick response to even things in the 10th minute. The home side took a 21st minute lead and held to secure a 2-1 win. The Lions return home for Thursday’s 7 p.m. game against Cal State Fullerton, then UC Santa Barbara comes to the bluff on Sunday for a 1 p.m. kickoff. Thursday night will be Latino Heritage night with shirts for the first 250 fans.

For the second-straight season, the Lions golf team traveled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to open the new year. LMU are competing in the Golfweek Conference Challenge from Sept. 15-17 at the Donald Ross Course at Cedar Rapids Country Club. Live scoring will be updated through Golfstatresult.com.

Coach Bonnie Adair of the LMU women’s swimming team, who is entering her 17th season, announced the 2019-20 schedule. The Lions will compete in 13 meets prior to the Pacific Collegiate Swim and Dive Conference Championships on Feb. 12 – 15 at East Los Angeles College. The Lions open the season at the PCSC Relays on Oct. 4 followed by the PCSC Pentathlon the next day at the SPLASH CENTER in La Mirada, California.
