Orozco Honored with Bonney Award

LMU STAFF SENATE | The Barbara Bonney Staff Member of the Year has been awarded to John Orozco, M.F.A. ’06, director of Student Conduct and Community Responsibility, by the Staff Senate’s Recognition and Opportunities Committee.

Orozco, who has worked in Judicial Affairs/Conduct and Community Responsibility since 2006, was honored for his dedication to maintaining excellence in this key Student Affairs department; for his collaborative spirit in conceiving and executing initiatives; his devotion to Jesuit ideals; his advocacy for colleagues; and his inspiring leadership over 15 years in the department and for the university.

“On a daily basis, John is an exemplar of what it means to hold students accountable but with care, concern and an unrelenting commitment to LMU’s mission of education of the whole person,” wrote Julia Wade and Briana Maturi in nominating Orozco. “In addition to his role as the director of OSCCR, John also serves as a facilitator for LMU CARES educational programming.”

Orozco oversees the university’s conduct process, collaborating with staff across Student Affairs. Always available to his colleagues, he truly ensures that the Student Conduct process is one that educates the whole person by staying up to date with external best practices and trainings. He oversees the most difficult behavioral issues our students experience, looking at how to best serve the individual students involved, as well as the larger university community. Orozco was integral to the development of the plan for implementing Restorative Practices and has been integral in resolving Title IX issues.

Orozco is a past president of the Staff Senate, using that role to advocate for health care, tuition remission questions, and responses to the Campus Climate Survey. He also teaches an Ignatian Leadership Institute course on “Social Change Model of Leadership.” He has hosted Coffee and Donuts, assisted with Learn at Lunches, and is the adviser to two fraternities. Orozco has been one of the strongest facilitators to present the Implicit Bias curriculum, chosen for his ability to work with people from all cultures and backgrounds, and to help others expand their ability to do so. He continues to be active in Intercultural Affairs’ Cultural Consciousness Conversations.

The Barbara Bonney Staff Member of the Year Award is presented annually to the staff member of the Westchester Campus who has shown continued excellence in their professional area, commitment to the ideals of higher education, leadership and initiative within one’s area or the University as a whole, unique contribution to improving the quality of life at LMU, and public service to the LMU community.
