UNIVERSITY NEWS | Three nominees, including two faculty members, bring a Loyola Marymount University influence to this year’s L.A. Press Club’s Southern California Journalism Awards.
Evelyn McDonnell, associate professor and director of LMU’s journalism program, is nominated for two essays, and Kristin Doidge, a journalism instructor, is nominated for a commentary. Also, journalist and essayist Lynell George ’84 was nominated for an essay published in LMU Magazine.
“We’re so proud to see Journalism Director Evelyn McDonnell and Instructor Kristin Doidge recognized by the L.A. Press Club alongside the best journalists in Los Angeles,” said Robbin D. Crabtree, dean of LMU Bellarmine of College of Liberal Arts. “We are fortunate to have such highly accomplished and working journalists preparing our students for their future careers.”
The winners of the awards will be announced at the 61st annual Press Club awards on June 30, 2019, at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. The judges evaluated more than 1,700 entries, more than ever before, for about 150 categories.
McDonnell was nominated in the review category for her piece “Rock-Your-World Moments Fill New Music Memoirs from Tina Turner and a Disillusioned Hit Maker,” published in the New York Times, and entertainment news and features category for “The Role of Struggle in Aretha Franklin’s Path to Greatness,” which appeared in Billboard. Doidge was nominated in the commentary/analysis on tv/film category for “The Pop Innovations of a 50-Year-Old Soundtrack,” published in The Atlantic.
George’s essay “Sweet Hope,” a meditation on what social and political hope would look like today, was published in the summer 2018 issue of LMU Magazine and is nominated in the commentary category. George, who was previously an assistant professor at LMU, won a Grammy Award in 2018 for the album notes she wrote for the box set “Otis Redding Live at the Whisky A Go Go: The Complete Recordings.”
